Amazon has invested an additional $5 billion in AI company Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI models. This latest investment brings Amazon’s total stake to $13 billion. The companies also have an agreement for Amazon to potentially commit another $20 billion in the future, contingent on commercial milestones.
This substantial funding and access to computing resources come as Anthropic experiences a surge in paid subscriptions for its Claude services. The increased demand has put a strain on existing infrastructure, leading to performance issues and occasional outages for users.
Anthropic stated that the growth has impacted reliability, particularly during peak hours for free, Pro, Max, and Team users. The new deal with Amazon is expected to deliver significant compute capacity within three months, with nearly 1 gigawatt planned by the end of 2026. The full 5 gigawatts of new compute capacity outlined in the agreement have not yet been given a specific timeframe for delivery.
