Meta is committing roughly $10 billion to its first data center in Canada, selecting Sturgeon County in Alberta as the site for a massive, AI-optimized facility.

The investment, estimated between $10 and $13 billion, includes the construction of a new 932-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant. Meta is partnering with energy companies Pembina Pipeline and Kineticor for the power generation component.

This project is part of Meta's broader North American infrastructure expansion, which includes similar multi-billion-dollar data centers in Louisiana, Indiana, and Texas.

The Alberta government has actively courted hyperscale AI infrastructure with policies allowing tech companies to build their own power supply. The province aims to attract over $100 billion in private investment by 2030.

Meta's use of natural gas power, rather than renewables, may draw scrutiny given the company's public sustainability commitments. The immense electricity demands of AI workloads have led other tech firms to also rely on fossil fuels or explore nuclear energy.
