The mental health charity Mind has initiated a year-long global commission to investigate artificial intelligence and mental health. This move follows a Guardian investigation that uncovered "very dangerous" medical advice provided by Google's AI Overviews. The inquiry will examine the risks and necessary safeguards as AI increasingly influences individuals with mental health challenges worldwide.

Mind's commission will convene leading doctors, mental health professionals, policymakers, tech companies, and individuals with lived experience. Its objective is to foster a safer digital mental health ecosystem through robust regulation, standards, and safeguards.

This action was prompted by the Guardian's reporting on inaccurate and misleading health information in Google AI Overviews, which reach two billion users monthly. Google has since removed AI Overviews for some medical searches, but "dangerously incorrect" mental health advice reportedly persists, posing significant risks.

Mind's CEO, Dr. Sarah Hughes, stated that while AI holds potential to enhance mental health support, responsible development with proportionate safeguards is crucial. "Innovation must not compromise well-being," she emphasized, ensuring those with lived experience are central to shaping digital support futures.

Despite Google's claims of AI Overviews being "helpful" and "reliable," the Guardian investigation revealed inaccuracies in health advice, including for mental health conditions, potentially leading users to avoid seeking professional help. Experts warned that some AI Overviews offered "very dangerous advice."

Hughes highlighted that vulnerable individuals are receiving "dangerously incorrect guidance on mental health" that could deter treatment, perpetuate stigma, or even risk lives. She stressed the public's right to information that is "safe, accurate and grounded in evidence."

Rosie Weatherley, Mind's information content manager, noted that while previous search results were imperfect, they offered a path to credible information and support. She described AI Overviews as a "seductive swap" that replaces richness with a misleading sense of certainty.

A Google spokesperson asserted significant investment in AI Overview quality, particularly for health topics, and stated that most provide accurate information. They also noted efforts to display crisis hotlines for users in distress.
