Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Saturday that the company's ambitious Terafab project, designed to manufacture artificial intelligence chips, will launch in seven days. This initiative aims to address the critical shortage of AI chips needed to power Tesla's autonomous driving systems, including its Full Self-Driving software.

Musk previously indicated the necessity of building a "gigantic chip fab" to achieve the required chip production volume. Tesla is currently developing its fifth-generation AI chip and has explored partnerships with major chip manufacturers like Intel, TSMC, and Samsung. However, Musk stated that even with current suppliers, the projected chip output is insufficient, necessitating Tesla's own large-scale fabrication facility.

The Terafab project is envisioned as a facility significantly larger than Tesla's existing Gigafactories, underscoring the scale of the company's commitment to in-house AI chip production.
