Germany Transforms Abandoned Rails Into Automated Monorail Network

In a landmark infrastructure project, Germany is converting abandoned railway lines into a futuristic automated monorail network known as MONOCAB OWL. Situated in North Rhine-Westphalia, the system connects rural towns to urban centers utilizing existing tracks without full electrification requirements.

Operated by KVG Lippe, the service runs every five to ten minutes at standard bus fares. Creator Thorsten Försterling developed the concept during the pandemic alongside researchers from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

Each three-ton cabin runs on electric batteries. Advanced gyroscopes and compensation masses stabilize the vehicle on a single rail. Technology director Martin Griese confirms design speeds reaching 60 kilometers per hour.

Funding involves substantial investment from the EU Cohesion Policy and regional authorities. Current expenditures exceed €5 million through late 2026. Officials anticipate a full operational launch by 2032 after a 2028 test phase. The project recently received the REGIOSTARS Award for European excellence.
