As NASA's Artemis II mission prepares for its return, the agency is making critical decisions for the next lunar endeavor, Artemis III. A modified timeline now includes a mission in Earth orbit before the planned lunar landings, designed to "buy down" risk for the subsequent Artemis IV mission.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that discussions are underway regarding the initial orbit for Artemis III, with options including Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) or High-Earth Orbit (HEO). The choice impacts the mission's architecture and resource allocation.
Artemis III will launch astronauts on a Space Launch System rocket, rendezvousing with Human Landing Systems developed by SpaceX (Starship) and Blue Origin (Blue Moon lander). A LEO rendezvous could conserve the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage for Artemis IV, while a HEO mission would require its use.
