American cities are rapidly adopting noise cameras to crack down on excessive vehicle noise. These pole-mounted devices use microphones and license plate cameras to issue tickets for decibel levels above legal thresholds, often without prior warning.

New York City has been enforcing this technology since 2021, issuing over 1,600 violations and collecting nearly $2 million in fines. Fines can reach $800 for a first offense and escalate to $2,500 for repeat offenders. Similar programs are expanding across the U.S., including California, Chicago, and Rhode Island.

Critics argue that these cameras could disproportionately impact lower-income neighborhoods, raising concerns about surveillance and revenue generation. Drivers are advised to check local decibel limits to avoid fines.
