OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.5, its latest artificial intelligence model, described as its "smartest and most intuitive model yet."
The new model demonstrates improved comprehension of user intent, enabling it to perform multi-step operations such as writing and debugging code, analyzing data, and generating documents and spreadsheets.
Unlike previous iterations, GPT-5.5 can manage tasks requiring sequential instructions, plan its approach, and execute them to completion without constant user input.
OpenAI highlights its utility in coding, routine office functions, and early-stage scientific research. Performance benchmarks show GPT-5.5 outperforming its predecessor, GPT-5.4, in complex coding tests, including command-line operations and resolving GitHub issues.
The model is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as OpenAI's coding tool, Codex. It will also be accessible via Application Programming Interface (API) for integration into third-party applications and services.
OpenAI states that GPT-5.5 incorporates its "strongest safeguards to date," having undergone extensive testing with nearly 200 early-access partners across software, finance, communications, drug discovery, and scientific research.
This release occurs amidst rising global concerns regarding the safety and control of advanced AI systems, as tech companies engage in a rapid innovation race.
