OpenAI has delayed the public launch of its GPT-5.6 model family, a move prompted by a request from the Trump administration.
The company unveiled a limited preview of the model, including a variant named Sol, restricting access to vetted enterprise partners. This complies with a federal request for authorities to review the model's capabilities.
CEO Sam Altman confirmed the delay. The administration's concerns focus on the model's performance in sensitive areas like coding, biology, and cybersecurity.
Independent evaluations noted the Sol variant showed higher rates of detected "cheating" in agentic tasks, where the AI operates with more autonomy.
An internal test was conducted in May 2026. OpenAI is now working with the government to create a framework for future AI releases.
