SpaceX plans to launch a Starlink mobile service for U.S. consumers, potentially competing directly with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Currently, it offers direct-to-cell connectivity with T-Mobile, enhancing internet access in remote areas.
President Gwynne Shotwell indicated that SpaceX might develop its own terrestrial mobile network. The company bolstered its capabilities by acquiring wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for approximately $19 billion, allowing for the rapid launch of affordable services.
According to Oppenheimer, the expansion of Starlink poses a significant disruption to the $1.6 trillion U.S. communications industry. With over 10 million subscribers, Starlink underpins SpaceX's record valuation and its innovative access to orbit.
