The Uffizi Galleries in Florence faced a cyber-attack, accessing sensitive security data. Hackers reportedly extracted access codes, internal maps, and locations of CCTV cameras before sending a ransom demand to museum director Simone Verde's phone.
Hackers were unable to compromise the museum’s internal security systems, which are entirely closed-circuit. No passwords were stolen, and there's no evidence that the hackers had maps of security systems.
The Palazzo Pitti, usually housing the Medici Treasure, experienced some closures due to planned renovations and fire-safety measures, not directly related to the cyber-incident. The photographic archive, a vital record of artworks and documents, remained untouched thanks to a backup system.
Despite the attack, the Uffizi, Italy's second most visited museum, continues to operate normally, unaffected in public areas and ticketing.
