Barclays Chief Executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan stated that Anthropic's advanced AI model, Mythos, poses a serious threat to the global banking system. He warned that similar, more powerful cyberthreats are expected to emerge with increasing frequency.
The AI's advanced coding capabilities could allow it to identify and exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities, raising concerns about its potential use to destabilize banks. Regulators are currently reviewing the model to assess the cybersecurity risks.
"On Mythos, look, it's a serious issue," Venkatakrishnan told a G30 consultancy group meeting. "But here's the thing: there will be a Mythos 2 and a Mythos 3, and they'll come up with probably distressing frequency."
He emphasized that these technological advancements will accelerate an innovation race for lenders, presenting particular challenges for larger institutions with legacy systems. "We have to understand its capabilities and we have to understand how to safeguard against it."
