At least 23 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in suspected suicide bombings Monday night in Maiduguri, Nigeria, police said Tuesday.

Three explosions struck crowded areas, including a major market and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

"Regrettably, a total of 23 persons lost their lives, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries," said Borno state police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso.

No group has claimed responsibility, but suspicion centers on Boko Haram and its ISIS-affiliated faction, Islamic State West Africa Province. The attacks mark one of the deadliest in Maiduguri in years, despite recent relative calm in the city.

Local residents reported chaos at hospitals, with urgent calls for blood donations.
