Five people have died in a series of avalanches in the Austrian Alps following heavy snowfall. A 42-year-old German man and his 16-year-old son were among the victims in Nauders, near the Swiss-Italian border. The teenager was airlifted to a hospital.

In the popular St Anton resort, three skiers were killed in a separate avalanche, with authorities indicating it may have been triggered by the skiers themselves. Two of these victims were identified as American and Polish nationals, while the third was a 21-year-old Austrian. Two other individuals were recovered injured from the scene. A fourth fatality occurred in the neighboring Vorarlberg region when a snowboarder was buried.

These incidents add to Austria's grim winter toll, with at least 21 avalanche-related deaths recorded this season. The avalanche risk remains high in parts of Tyrol. Separately, a 53-year-old man died in Linz after being struck by a snow plough.

The severe weather also led to widespread power outages and transport disruptions across the region, including temporary closures and delays at Vienna International Airport.
