Folarin Balogun will miss the US Men’s National Team’s World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium on July 6. FIFA regulations leave no room for dispute.

Balogun received a straight red card during the team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under FIFA Rule 10.5. US Soccer confirmed there is “no mechanism for appeal,” a hardline policy that stands in stark contrast to the appeals processes available in domestic leagues.

The ejection came in the 64th minute after video assistant referee technology escalated a challenge on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. Midfielder Weston McKennie called the inability to challenge the suspension “bogus.”

For the 49,000 fans expected in Seattle, the practical result is simple: America’s attack will be significantly weaker without one of its most dynamic offensive weapons. The situation could worsen, as FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee retains the option to impose additional match bans beyond the mandatory one-game suspension.
