Ethiopia's most prominent musician, Teddy Afro, has released a new song titled "Das Tal" that appears to criticize the government. The track, translating to "put up the tent," has garnered over seven million views on YouTube since its Thursday release. Teddy Afro, whose real name is Tewodros Kassahun, sings about grieving a lost country, stating, "The spirit of being Ethiopian is now pushed away."

The artist has a history of challenging Ethiopian governments. He previously served 16 months in prison for a hit-and-run incident, which he claimed was politically motivated. His 2017 album, "Ethiopia," focused on historical themes and unity. The current song builds on his 2022 track expressing concern over rising "tribalism."

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power promising unity after widespread anti-government protests. Teddy Afro initially supported this vision but has since become disillusioned by escalating violence, including a devastating civil war. The government, however, continues to emphasize unity as crucial for prosperity and security, especially as general elections approach in June.
