Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Thursday that Germany has resumed diplomatic talks with Iran. This move follows a fragile truce between Tehran and Washington, potentially paving the way for peace negotiations.

Merz stated that the German government is restarting discussions with Tehran, emphasizing coordination with the United States and European allies. High-level talks between Berlin and Tehran had been absent since the summer of 2025.

Previously, relations soured over Iran's nuclear deal compliance and its response to protests. Germany had also closed Iranian consulates in 2024 after the execution of a German-Iranian national.

Germany views the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Lebanon with concern, warning it could jeopardize anticipated peace talks between the United States and Iran over the Middle East conflict. Merz called for an end to the escalating military actions that are destabilizing the region.
