Pope Leo XIV held an open-air mass at Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles on Sunday, drawing over a million people, according to the Vatican. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia joined the congregants. The Pope waved from his popemobile as crowds cheered and threw petals.

The event capped the second day of his visit to Spain, the first papal trip in 15 years. On Saturday, 500,000 faithful-mostly youth-joined a prayer vigil at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium, where he urged them to be "sparks of a new humanity."

The Pope later plans an unprecedented address before the Spanish parliament, a meeting with abuse victims, and a trip to the Canary Islands with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to honor migrants who died crossing to Europe.
