A humpback whale, nicknamed Timmy, stranded in shallow Baltic Sea waters since March, has begun an extensive journey toward the North Sea. The rescue operation, initially publicly funded, received a significant boost from two German entrepreneurs who provided additional financial support.
Timmy is now on a flooded barge being pulled by a tugboat, embarking on a multi-day, 400-kilometer trip. Scientists have expressed uncertainty about the whale's survival during transport, with some veterinarians deeming the animal fit for the journey while others caution about the potential stress.
