Indonesia will implement a ban on social media and other high-risk online platforms for individuals under 16, beginning March 28. Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid announced that accounts for this age group on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox will be deactivated. This move aims to protect young people from online threats, including pornography, cyberbullying, and addiction, with the government stating it will support parents in navigating the digital world.
Concerns highlighted by UNICEF in 2023 indicated that approximately half of Indonesian children surveyed had been exposed to sexual images on social media. While some parents welcome the regulation as a means to alleviate worries and enhance parental monitoring, younger individuals suggest alternative approaches, emphasizing the need for engaging content and incentives to reduce screen time.
