An Iranian gunboat fired upon a container ship off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, causing significant damage to the vessel's bridge. The incident occurred approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
While the ship was reportedly informed it had permission to transit the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian news agency Tasnim stated the vessel had ignored warnings from Iran's armed forces.
In a separate incident, a cargo ship eight nautical miles west of Iran was also fired upon and stopped. The identity of the attacker in this second incident remains unclear. The crew in both events are reported safe with no fires or environmental impact.
Shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has faced increased restrictions.
