Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salamé has labeled the recent Israeli military campaign in Lebanon as an 'invasion,' emphasizing the severe impact on Lebanese sovereignty and civilian life. Since early March, the conflict has escalated following Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel, leading to over 1 million internally displaced persons and more than 1,000 deaths, including humanitarian workers.
Salamé stated that the conflict has entered a new, more dangerous phase, with Israel potentially planning a buffer zone south of the Litani River, which could result in a long-term territorial occupation. This strategy involves the destruction of entire villages, leaving infrastructure in ruins and preventing civilians from returning home.
The Lebanese government has established over 700 shelters nationwide, but ongoing strikes and the targeting of ambulances and aid convoys have severely hampered relief efforts. Salamé also noted that Lebanon has attempted to open diplomatic channels, proposing formal negotiations with Israel, but has yet to receive a response.
