Montreal is asking Quebec's Court of Appeal to overturn a landmark ruling that found its police force engaged in systemic racial profiling. The class-action suit alleged racialized citizens were unfairly arrested, detained, and profiled between mid-August 2017 and January 2019.
In September 2024, a Superior Court justice ruled the city responsible, stating victims' Charter rights were violated and awarding up to $5,000 in damages. The Black Coalition of Quebec called the ruling historic, noting the difficulty in proving individual cases of racial profiling.
