Singapore has ordered Meta Platforms to disable access to social media posts displaying a video of an individual stepping on the Quran. The incident, believed to have occurred on a public bus in Singapore, was initially posted and subsequently shared across various platforms.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Singapore Police Force determined the video's content violated the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act, constituting an offense of insulting another religion.
Under the Online Criminal Harms Act 2023, Meta received five Disabling Directions, rendering the offensive content inaccessible to users within Singapore. The MHA advises the public to report such material to authorities rather than reposting, even to condemn the act, as it perpetuates the offensive content.
Authorities emphasize a firm stance against threats to racial and religious harmony, promising swift action against offenders. Police investigations are continuing.
