Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated that NATO is not required to assist Donald Trump's demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. She emphasized NATO's primary role is defending Europe and the North Atlantic, not engaging in conflicts of choice.
Valtonen stressed that NATO is a defensive alliance and will not be drawn into a war. Finland, she noted, is focused on its own security, especially its long border with Russia.
Despite the impact on global oil prices, Valtonen highlighted the collective interest in securing the Strait of Hormuz. She called for de-escalation and the free flow of oil, which is crucial for the world economy.
Trump warned NATO would have a 'bad future' if it did not help secure the strait, which is vital for one-fifth of the world's crude oil and LNG. European leaders are discussing a potential operation but have so far resisted expanding their naval mission to the Strait of Hormuz.
Valtonen suggested that Europe has strong leverage, including Ukraine's expertise in intercepting Iranian-made drones. This could be used to negotiate with the US over the Gulf crisis.
