Ankara police stormed the headquarters of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Sunday, attempting to reinstate former leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

More than 100 officers cut through the main gate and used tear gas on party members who had barricaded the reception area with furniture. A Euronews reporter was among those affected.

The raid follows a controversial court ruling nullifying the 2023 party congress that elected current leader Özgür Özel, citing alleged vote-buying. Normally, only the Supreme Electoral Council can make such decisions.

Tensions escalated after phone calls between Kılıçdaroğlu and Özel. Supporters of the former leader marched on the headquarters, drawing sharp condemnation from party MPs.

CHP MP Mahmut Tanal told Kılıçdaroğlu to "pull back your third-rate mafia thugs," while MP Nurhayat Altaca Kayışoğlu accused him of sacrificing the nation's future for personal gain.

Kılıçdaroğlu demanded compliance with the court ruling, as his lawyer requested police hand over the building. The standoff continues.
