Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reports Russia has again deployed its ‘Oreshnik’ intermediate-range ballistic missile, targeting the Kyiv region. Moscow claims the launch was a retaliatory attack, a statement Kyiv denies.

The use of the nuclear-capable weapon has triggered a diplomatic firestorm. German Chancellor Merz condemned it as a ‘reckless escalation.’ President Macron echoed that, stating it reveals the deadlock in Russia's war effort and represents a dangerous nuclear brinkmanship.

EU Commission President von der Leyen said the assault demonstrates ‘the Kremlin’s brutality and disregard for human life,’ while EU foreign policy chief Kallas warned of ‘reckless nuclear brinkmanship.’ EU foreign ministers plan to discuss further sanctions next week.

The attack involved an estimated 90 missiles and cruise missiles and 600 drones. While many were intercepted, the Kyiv studio of German broadcaster ARD was severely damaged. No casualties were reported at the studio.
