Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations after failing to secure a $500 million federal bailout from the Trump administration. The low-cost carrier, headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida, traces its roots to a Michigan trucking company in 1964 and rebranded as Spirit in 1992.
The airline accumulated over $3 billion in debt and filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced assistance for stranded passengers, including special fares from other airlines and automatic refunds for credit and debit card purchases.
