U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Iran of a "foolish violation" of its truce with Washington after a cargo ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz was attacked.
The Ever Lovely, a Singapore-flagged vessel, was struck by an unknown projectile Thursday morning. The ship's owner, Evergreen, reported only limited damage to the upper deck and no casualties. The vessel continued its voyage safely.
Trump stated on Truth Social that Iran launched at least four drones at ships in the strait, with one hitting the target. He confirmed the U.S. intercepted three of the drones.
The attack prompted the UN's International Maritime Organization to pause its planned evacuation of over 11,000 stranded sailors. IMO Secretary-General Dominguez said he is seeking guarantees from the U.S., Iran, and Oman that vessels will not be targeted before resuming operations.
The incident escalates tensions following a ceasefire deal that reopened the strait after it was effectively closed by Iran in late February following U.S. and Israeli attacks. The agreement included a provision for Iran to facilitate the safe passage of commercial vessels for 60 days.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously stated that attempts to cross the strait along an IMO-designated route would be "unacceptable." Iranian state media continues to report that Iran considers the strait its own territory.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments.
