The Trump administration is doubling down on resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa, proposing to raise the US refugee cap from 7,500 to 17,500 to admit an additional 10,000 Afrikaners before the fiscal year ends, according to a State Department plan obtained by CBS News.
The administration has effectively closed the refugee program to most nationalities, but argues Afrikaners face racial oppression. The South African government denies this.
The State Department cited an "emergency refugee situation" and said the additional admissions would cost about $100 million.
Of the 6,069 refugees resettled since October 2025, 99% were from South Africa.
President Trump has alleged a "genocide" against Afrikaners-a claim disputed by many Afrikaners themselves, who view the violence as part of a broader crime problem. He also pointed to a South African land expropriation law, though it does not specify race.
The proposal requires formal presidential approval, but congressional consultation has historically been a formality.
