Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche provided an update on the investigation into an attempted attack targeting administration officials. Speaking on 'Face the Nation,' Blanche confirmed that the FBI and other agencies have executed search warrants on locations and devices connected to the suspect.
"This investigation is just over 12 hours old," Blanche stated, emphasizing that the probe into the suspect's motivation and potential foreign nexus is ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect was targeting members of the administration, though specifics remain unclear. He is not cooperating with investigators and is expected to be formally charged in federal court.
The suspect, who had been staying at a hotel, approached a security checkpoint with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives. Blanche acknowledged that the investigation is still determining how the suspect was able to possess firearms within the hotel and travel by train from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. He stressed that the focus is on the suspect's actions and law enforcement's effective response, rather than changing gun laws.
Blanche confirmed that the suspect will face serious federal charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer. Further charges could be added as the investigation into his motive and intent develops.
Despite the presence of top leadership at a hotel event, Blanche assured that such incidents will not deter the administration or deter their public engagement. He also addressed reporting about potential risks of the President and Vice President appearing together, stating they are frequently in contact and that robust law enforcement measures are in place.
One Secret Service agent was injured during the incident but was reportedly in good spirits after being treated. Blanche reiterated that the day-to-day focus on security will continue, and while the evening was tragic, the swift apprehension of the suspect is considered a success for law enforcement.
