Public transport in Victoria and Tasmania is now free amid surging fuel prices linked to the escalating Middle East conflict.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan announced free trains, trams, and buses starting Tuesday to ease pressure on petrol pumps. Tasmania will also waive fares for buses, coaches, and ferries through June.

The move comes as Australia’s average petrol price jumped to A$2.38 per litre, up from A$2.09 a month ago. The spike follows disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route impacted by the US-Israel war with Iran.

Other states have resisted similar policies. New South Wales is holding funds for increased public transport demand, while South Australia is expanding senior travel benefits.
