Iran announced Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is now completely open for maritime traffic for the remainder of the ceasefire. This declaration was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on X.
Moments after Iran's announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, "Iran has just announced that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and ready for full passage. THANK YOU!"
President Trump further stated that the U.S. Navy's blockade on Iranian ships and ports will continue until a transaction with Iran is "100% COMPLETE," adding that the process is expected to be swift as most points have been negotiated.
These developments signal a potential resolution to the Hormuz crisis, possibly paving the way for a second round of U.S.-Iran talks mediated by Pakistan.
However, Araghchi specified that passage is permitted on "coordinated routes" as previously announced by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation, suggesting Iran may still seek to control traffic despite the U.S. blockade.
Traffic through the vital waterway, which previously handled a fifth of the world's crude oil and LNG supplies, had been largely blocked since the Iran war began with U.S.-Israeli air strikes on February 28th.
The U.S. naval blockade, enacted Monday, saw President Trump warn that any ships attempting to break it would be "eliminated." Trump also claimed on Truth Social that "Iran's navy is laying at the bottom of the sea, completely obliterated - 158 ships."
