US President Donald Trump confirmed he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in China on May 14-15, following a delay caused by the US-Israel military campaign against Iran.
The trip, initially set for March 31, was postponed after coordinated strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader, triggering retaliatory attacks and closure of the Strait of Hormuz-sparking a global fuel crisis.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Xi accepted the delay, emphasizing Trump’s need to remain in the US during combat operations.
This will be the first visit by a sitting US president to China in nearly a decade. The two leaders last met in October in South Korea during the Apec summit.
Chinese officials have not formally confirmed the dates but acknowledged ongoing communication about the visit. The bilateral relationship remains strained over trade, technology, and regional security.
Trump is also expected to host Xi at the White House later this year as part of renewed diplomatic engagement.
