The UAE Ministry of Defense intercepted three drones entering the country’s airspace from its western border on May 17. Two were neutralized, but one evaded defenses and struck an electrical generator near the Barakah nuclear power plant. Fire from the strike was contained. No injuries or radiological safety impact were reported.

The Barakah plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region is the Arab world’s first multi-unit nuclear facility, providing roughly 25% of the UAE’s electricity. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed normal radiation levels at the site.

Officials are calling it a terrorist attack and have launched an investigation into the origin of the drones. No attribution has been made yet. The diplomatic or military response to the findings could reshape regional energy security and investor confidence.
