The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Thursday to address a sharp increase in civilian casualties from Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine.
Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN's political and peacebuilding chief, told the council that every diplomatic tool must be used to achieve an immediate de-escalation of the conflict.
The session convened as attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and urban centers continue, causing significant loss of life and damage.
The council's focus remains on protecting civilians and finding a path to reduce the violence that has intensified in recent weeks.
