United Nations human rights experts have declared a medical emergency regarding British nationals Lindsay and Craig Foreman, currently serving ten-year sentences in an Iranian prison. Special rapporteurs Dr. Alice Edwards and Mai Sato state the couple has been wrongfully detained and demand their immediate release after thirty days of hunger striking in Tehran’s Evin jail.
The Foremans were arrested in January 2025 during a global motorcycle expedition and convicted of espionage, charges they vehemently deny. UN officials assert the legal proceedings failed to meet basic fair trial guarantees and suggest the detention may serve as political leverage. The situation escalated when family communication was severed last month, prompting the couple's refusal of food.

Family representatives report the pair was barred from attending their own appeal hearing, though the case has since advanced to the Supreme Court. The UK Foreign Office confirms it is pursuing all diplomatic avenues to secure their safe return. Relatives emphasize that any future geopolitical framework with Iran must prioritize the freedom of foreign detainees over strategic negotiations.
