The US military has launched new strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile sites and boats attempting to place mines, according to US Central Command.

CENTCOM said the strikes were taken in self-defense to protect troops from Iranian threats. A spokesperson noted the military continues to defend forces while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said some progress has been made in talks with the US, but a deal "is not imminent."

President Donald Trump had suggested the sides were close to an agreement over the weekend, but later instructed negotiators not to rush. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated a deal could be reached Monday. Baqai pushed back, saying no one can claim an agreement is imminent.

The US and Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran on February 28, sparking conflict across the Middle East. Iran responded by attacking Israel and US-allied Gulf states and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, sending oil prices soaring.
