A former US National Guard member, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, carried out a fatal shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia before being subdued by students and dying at the scene. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

Jalloh previously pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State group and was released from prison in 2024. Authorities stated Jalloh shouted "Allahu akbar" before the attack and intended to replicate the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

All three victims were members of the college's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). The deceased victim was identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, an ROTC instructor. Brave ROTC students in the room are credited with subduing the gunman, preventing further casualties.
