World Economic Forum President Børge Brende is stepping down after facing pressure regarding his contacts with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Brende, a former Norwegian foreign minister, stated he decided "after careful consideration" to resign as president and chief executive of the WEF, known for its annual summit in Davos. He cited the need for the forum to continue its work without distractions.
The resignation follows an internal review by the WEF into Brende's relationship with Epstein, prompted by files indicating they had met and exchanged messages. Brende had previously stated he met Epstein in business settings and was unaware of his criminal background.
The WEF announced that Alois Zwinggi will serve as interim president and CEO.
