The global players' union FIFPRO issued a stark warning Saturday, confirming that athletes at the World Cup are facing a systemic pattern of racist and discriminatory abuse.

As the tournament progresses into the final rounds, the union highlighted that intimidation and hostility are extending beyond the pitch. FIFPRO insists that bearing the expectations of a nation must never compromise a player's safety or dignity.

FIFA reported a 13-fold surge in online abuse during the group stage, with 11% identified as racially motivated. The issue continued into the knockout rounds, where Netherlands players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville were targeted with racist attacks after a penalty shootout defeat.

FIFPRO stated that monitoring and reporting are insufficient without meaningful consequences. The union is calling for a collective commitment from law enforcement, social media platforms, and football stakeholders to reverse the trend.
