Ajax 'have DOUBTS over re-signing Antony from Manchester United'

Ajax are reportedly unsure about the idea of re-signing Antony from Manchester United.

The Red Devils spent £86million to bring in the Brazilian from the Dutch giants in the summer of 2022, but he has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old - who played under Erik ten Hag in the Netherlands - has scored just 12 goals in 86 appearances and has dramatically fallen down the pecking order this season, sparking speculation over his future.

Antony was linked with a move away throughout the summer andMail Sport revealed last week how United are open to letting their the winger go out on loan in January to help secure a permanent move for him next year.

One of those clubs touted with an interest is Ajax, with Antony having scored 24 goals and added 22 assists over two impressive breakout seasons with the club.

Antony enjoyed two hugely impressive breakout seasons with Ajax after joining in 2020

However, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax have doubts over whether to make a move.

The report claims that the Dutch side - who have discussed the possibility of signing the Brazilian - are unsure about the state of Antony's mindset after his struggles to make an impact at Old Trafford.

When asked about Antony’s situation at United last month, Ten Hag insisted that the winger needed to do more to get more gametime.

‘He’s impatient, he wants to play,’ Ten Hag said. ‘But in top football there are laws.

'You pick the team that has most chance to win the game, the one with the best dynamic, the best chemistry. Players have to fight for their positions.

‘The other players are doing so well – they’re contributing. He has to get over them. He has to earn the right in training.’

Mail Sport reported last week how United are ready to call time on Antony’s career, with the club valuing the Brazilian at £40m.

Even though three wide players – Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Omari Forson – left Old Trafford in the summer, Antony is still fourth in the pecking order behind Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo.

This season he has made just four appearances and one start, playing 27 minutes in the Premier League and scoring once in the 7-0 Carabao Cup rout of Barnsley.

By sending Antony out on loan in January to get more game time elsewhere, United may be able to attract more interest in the player next summer.

But they would be lucky to recoup half of the fee paid to Ajax, representing a huge loss at a time when new co-owners Ineos are conducting a brutal cost-cutting drive that has led to 250 redundancies and the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role with the club.

United, who currently sit 12th in the Premier League, are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Fenerbahce in the Europa League, before they face the struggling West Ham on Sunday.
