Man United legend reveals why Erik Ten Hag 'not good enough' for job

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has revealed why Erik Ten Hag is 'not good enough' to keep his job at Old Trafford and has predicted the Dutchman will be sacked by Christmas.

The former Ajax manager joined the Red Devils in 2022 and has endured a tough couple of seasons at the helm, finishing eighth on just 60 points last campaign.

He faced calls for his departure at the end of the season but a 2-1 win against rivals Man City in the FA Cup final proved enough to cling on to his job.

After spending £180million in the summer transfer window, fans were hoping Ten Hag could turn things around - but crushing defeats to Brighton and Liverpool in the first three matches have reignited the clamour for his departure.

One of the dissenting voices is former striker Sheringham who told Ladbrokes that the 54-year-old is 'not good enough' to manage a club of United's stature.

Liverpool cruised to a comprehensive victory over United thanks to a double from Luis Diaz

He said: 'When you're finishing eighth in the Premier League, that's quite clearly not good enough, for Man United. Full stop. End of story, for me. You've got to change what's going on.

'When you look at the inconsistency of last season, and that has followed on, without a shadow of the doubt in the first three games of this season... you can see there's been no change whatsoever.

'Different players, maybe. But still no change in the philosophy, and the way Erik ten Hag wants to play. Look, I don't want to see people getting sacked. It's not nice to say that people shouldn't be in certain positions, but he shouldn't be there. It's not good enough for Man United.

'Do I think the manager will be there at the end of the season? No, I don't. I think he'll be gone by Christmas.'

The brutal assessment follows a humiliating Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford which saw Arne Slot's Liverpool tear United apart in a 3-0 win.

The Reds cruised to a comprehensive victory thanks to a first-half double from Luis Diaz before Mo Salah wrapped up the win after the break.

After their defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, United have now lost two of their opening three fixtures and sit 14th in the table.

Things may get better when their new £50m midfield signing Manuel Ugarte, who was paraded on the pitch before this game, is available to play.

But Ten Hag needs things to change immediately after this week's international break with pressure mounting on his position in charge of the Old Trafford side.

Despite Joshua Zirkzee and others coming close in the second half, the atmosphere in the stadium turned decidedly bitter as Liverpool sauntered to victory.

Ten Hag might find that fans, including Sheringham who won an iconic treble with United in 1999, have very little patience remaining as the Red Devils look set for another painful campaign.
