Awara is one of the many brands under the Resident Home umbrella, which also includes Nectar, Dreamcloud, Cloverlane and other home furniture brands. There are two different Awara mattresses, the Natural -- which is the subject of this review -- and the Awara Premier Natural. The Natural is the most "basic" of the two Awara mattresses, but basic does not mean bad in any way. This bed provides a ton of value with responsive, cushiony latex foam above supportive coils -- and anyone looking for an eco-friendly mattress backed by lots of certifications should be giving the Awara Natural a look.

First impressions of the Awara Natural mattress

This is the third iteration of the base model Awara that we have tested in our office. Internally, the beds haven't changed much throughout the updates but the newest version of Awara certainly looks different than the original one we tested over 5 years ago.

The cover on the new version is less white and more "earthly" looking which I think is beneficial to show off the organic materials used in the construction of the Awara Natural. When I first tried this new version of Awara I was expecting the same type of firmness profile and feel of the previous versions and that is exactly what I observed.

Since this is an organic mattress, the main comfort layer of the Awara Natural is latex foam, which has a very distinctive feel. Natural and Organic mattresses almost always feature latex foam because it is a naturally derived material as opposed to being chemical based like most other mattress foams.

My overall impression of the Awara Natural was quite positive, and it was even more positive after I saw the price point, which we'll cover later in this review.

Is the Awara Natural mattress right for you?

For anyone looking for an organic mattress who is also shopping on a budget, I think the Awara Natural is going to be one of your best bets. Most latex hybrids that feature organic materials are generally expensive, but somehow, after factoring in discounts, the Awara Natural is in the same price bracket as some all-foam mattresses with no organic materials.

You will have to be ok with the bed's specific type of latex feel and be ok with a bed that is pretty firm, and if you are, the value of the Awara Natural mattress is difficult to beat.

Awara Natural Hybrid firmness and feel

Awara Natural feel

The feel of the Awara Natural is defined by its top comfort layer, which is latex foam. The feel of latex foam is very distinct in large part due to its responsiveness.

Responsiveness refers to how quickly the foam returns to its original shape when weight and pressure are taken away. A super responsive foam like latex moves with you when you move so if you rotate from your back to your side, as an example, the foam makes it easy because it responds to your movement. On the other hand, traditional memory foam is very slow to respond, which means that you can encounter a bit of resistance when changing sleeping positions.

Latex foam provides a cushioned, buoyant feel that I think most sleepers will find comfortable -- just be aware that it will feel different than your current mattress or mattresses you've tried in the past and that if you know you love the feel of memory foam, a latex feel is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Awara Natural firmness and sleeper types

The Awara Natural is on the firm side of the scale, and it is the key difference between this bed and the Awara Premier, which is quite a bit more plush.

In our tests we found the Awara Natural to be roughly a medium-firm, if not a bit firmer which makes it most ideal for back sleepers looking for a bed with little give and lots of support. Certain stomach sleepers might also like this firmness profile, as well as combination sleepers who don't spend much time sleeping on their side.

For side sleepers, I cannot recommend a mattress this firm, and I think you may have discomfort from not getting enough pressure relief for your hips and shoulders.

Awara Natural Hybrid construction

The main support layer of the Awara Natural is an eight-inch-thick layer of pocketed coils with a reinforced perimeter to improve the edge support. Hybrid beds that use coils tend to be more durable and supportive over the lifespan of a mattress, especially for heavier individuals and coils provide more bounce and airflow as well. There are plenty of sleepers who prefer foam mattresses because they are lighter, easier to move and provide better motion isolation.

Above the coil layer is the main comfort layer of the Awara Natural, which is a two-inch-thick layer of latex foam, and then there is a luxurious quilted cover made with a bamboo rayon blend and filled with wool for additional comfort.

Most of the materials used in the Awara Natural feature some kind of certification to show that it is organic. The latex foam is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and the wool used in the cover is certified organic New Zealand wool by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Previous iterations of this mattress did not have the GOLS certification, which many other brands have so I think this certification is a welcome addition to the Awara Natural and anyone who is really interested in their next mattress being eco-friendly with ethically sourced materials should feel comfortable with Awara.

Avocado is still the gold standard for organic mattresses, in my opinion, and the entire brand is certified climate-neutral, which I think is very impressive, but Awara has closed that gap when it comes to certifications.

Awara Natural Hybrid performance

Edge support

The edge support of a mattress refers to how well the perimeter of the bed holds up under pressure. If a mattress has poor edge support, if you end up sleeping near the perimeter, it can feel like you are going to roll off the mattress, which is very detrimental to restful sleep.

Fortunately, the edge support on the Awara Natural is solid, and in our testing, we found no issues. Firmer beds tend to perform slightly better in the category and it was apparent that the coils along the perimeter of the mattress are reinforced to really enhance the edge support.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation is another factor important for couples because a bed with poor motion isolation can wake you up if your partner tosses and turns throughout the night.

Due to the nature of the materials -- the Awara Natural does not perform all that well in this category. Latex foam and coils combine to make this mattress incredibly responsive and springy so it does not isolate motion as well as other online mattresses, especially a classic memory foam like Tempur-Pedic which is famous for its motion isolation.

If you are a light sleeper, you may wake up more on this mattress than others if your partner tosses and turns a lot at night, so just keep that in mind if you are thinking about the Awara Natural or any other latex mattress.

Temperature regulation

We would describe the Awara Natural as a temperature neutral mattress. There is nothing in the construction that helps sleepers cool off like on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe or the Nectar Premier Copper -- but latex foam is a naturally breathable material and pocketed coils also provide airflow so it shouldn't heat up on you too much.

Although some members of our team slept on the Avocado Luxury Organic, which uses similar types of materials as the Awara Natural, for 30 nights and it did heat up on them a bit.

Awara Natural Hybrid Pricing

SizeMeasurements (inches)Price

Twin XL38x80$1,299
Full54x75$1,599
Queen60x80$1,699
King76x80$1,999
Cal king72x84$1,999

The Awara Natural is one of the most affordable latex hybrid beds we have ever tested. The retail price is already affordable when compared to mattresses in its class, like the Avocado Green, but when you factor in discounts, it becomes as affordable as some simple all-foam mattresses.

I have seen this mattress get as low as one-thousand dollars for a Queen size, and considering the natural and organic materials, I think that discounted price is remarkable, and I don't actually know how Awara is able to price this mattress that low.

Pricing is always subject to change so make sure to check out our mattress deals page for the latest -- but ever since I tested the first iteration of Awara it has always been an affordable mattress.

Awara mattress policies

Free shipping

Like most online mattresses, this will ship right to your door at no extra cost inside of a large box. Unboxing a mattress usually only takes a few minutes, and we recommend unboxing it with a friend to make the process go more smoothly.

It is possible to unbox lighter mattresses solo, which I have done before, but I wouldn't recommend trying to unbox the Awara mattress by yourself because it is heavier than your average mattress (132 pounds in the queen size).

365-night trial

All Awara mattresses and other beds from Resident Home come with an extra-long trial period of 365 nights in comparison to the usual standard of 100 nights. So you have quite a while to really test it out and see if you like it.

Keep in mind that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to your sleeping preferences. The trial period begins the day the mattress is delivered, not when you actually start sleeping on it.

Return policy

If you decide after the first 30-nights that the Awara Natural is not the mattress you want you can return it and get a full refund with no fees. Most brands will ask you to sleep on the bed for at least a month to give your body enough time to adjust to it because no matter how well suited a new mattress is to you and your sleep style it will take some amount of time to adjust.

Warranty

The Awara mattresses are backed by a "Forever" warranty, which is above and beyond the usual online mattress standard of ten years.

Like pretty much any warranty that lasts longer than 10 years, this warranty is tiered and offers more protection in the first 10 years in comparison to the years after but it is still above what we normally see in terms of warranty.

How does the Awara Natural compare to similar mattresses?

Awara Natural vs. Avocado Green

The Avocado Green mattress is probably the most popular organic latex mattress and is the bed that other brands with latex beds compete with the most. The base model Avocado Green has a nearly identical feel to the Awara Natural because it also uses coils for support and a two-inch-thick layer of latex foam for comfort. The base model Avocado Green is also roughly the same firmness profile as the Awara Natural (the Green is slightly firmer but not by a significant amount).

The biggest difference comes down to the pricing and certifications: Awara is more affordable than Avocado, but Avocado has more certifications including a climate-neutral certification that shoppers concerned with eco-friendliness might be interested in.

The Avocado Green comes with optional pillow tops to make the mattress feel more plush at an additional cost, and the Awara has a different model called the Awara Natural Premier that achieves the same goal.

Awara Natural vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

Saatva's version of a coil mattress with latex foam is its Latex Hybrid mattress. It is very similar to Awara, and many other latex mattresses with that same type of responsive, buoyant feel, and the Saatva Latex Hybrid is roughly the same firmness profile as the Awara Natural.

Also like the Awara Natura, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is backed by many certifications to show that the materials are natural and organic. The Saatva Latex Hybrid is more expensive than the Awara Natural, but it also comes with complimentary white glove delivery which means you don't have to unbox the mattress yourself and the team that sets it up will also haul away and dispose of your old mattress if you want.

Final thoughts on the Awara Natural mattress

I think anyone interested in a natural latex mattress should give the Awara Natural a look. It gives shoppers looking for an eco-friendly mattress a pretty incredible value by being one of the most affordable beds in this category while still having a surprising number of organic certifications that eco-friendly shoppers might be interested in. Awara might not have quite as many different certifications as Avocado but considering the price gap I think the Awara Natural compares well.

The feel of this mattress might not be for everyone and it is most appealing to back and stomach sleepers with its firmer than average profile so definitely keep that in mind -- but for a natural latex hybrid it is tough to beat the value provided by the Awara Natural.

You might like the Awara Natural mattress if:

  • You enjoy a bouncy mattress feel
  • You want an organic mattress
  • You are shopping on a budget

You might not like the Awara Natural mattress if:

  • You prefer a memory foam feel
  • You want a soft mattress
  • You want a cooling mattress

Other mattresses from Awara

Awara Premier Natural Hybrid: this is essentially an upgraded version of the base model Awara Natural. It has virtually the exact same design, only it features two additional inches of latex comfort foam which make it a more plush option. The Awara Premier Natural is between a medium and a medium-firm on our firmness scale which makes it more accommodating for side sleepers and a more ideal option for couples with different firmness preferences.
