Barcelona 'send ultimatum to injured midfielder Frankie de Jong'

Frankie de Jong has reportedly been set a deadline by Barcelona bosses who have grown frustrated by his injury situation.

The 27-year-old has been out of action since April after injuring his right ankle at Real Madrid during the final Clasico of last season.

Manager Hansi Flick had been hoping to have De Jong available for the start of the current campaign but he has missed the first three fixtures, all of which Barca have won 2-1.

The reason for De Jong's ongoing absence is that he is still feeling pain in his ankle.

According to Mundo Deportivo on Saturday, De Jong has now been told that he has 15 days to make a decision. His choices are apparently to either undergo surgery on his ankle or to return to the field and play through the pain.

Frankie de Jong has not played for Barcelona since he injured his ankle against Real Madrid

De Jong has made 213 appearances for Barca since moving to the Camp Nou from Ajax in 2019.

He featured in 20 La Liga games last season before injuring his ankle at the Bernabeu.

His current contract with Barca is due to expire in June 2026.

The Netherlands international was heavily linked with interest from Manchester United before the summer transfer window closed on Friday night.
