Carragher hits out at Everton for brutally mocking Gordon

The 23-year-old left Everton for £45million after 11 years at the club in January 2023 after submitting a transfer request and missing a series of training sessions.

His penalty miss delighted Everton supporters around the ground and on social media, who still have a distaste for Gordon due to the manner of his departure.

And Everton took the opportunity to brutally respond to the winger's misfortunes by posting a video of the missed spot-kick with a buzzer sound.

Gordon, 23, saw his tame first-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford against his former club

The sound is familiar to Toffees fans as it's the one used whenever a supporter fails to score during the half-time shows at Goodison Park.

The post, which amassed over seven million views on X, was criticised by former Liverpool defender Carragher, who voiced his anger when re-tweeting the video.

He wrote: 'Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch & who you then sold for £40million. The Peoples club!'

Gordon joined the Everton academy in 2012, after being released by rivals Liverpool, and went on to notch up 78 appearances for the club.

The winger played an integral part in the Toffees survival in the 2021-22 campaign under then manager Frank Lampard.

His performances for the Merseyside club that year led to much adoration from the Blues fans, but that would later drift away following his move to the north east.

Following the stalemate, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was keen to shine Gordon's overall performance in a positive light.

'I think Anthony [Gordon] handled the occasion very well,' He told Match of the Day. 'His all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save.'

Gordon has yet to bag a goal or assist in the three appearances he has managed against his former club.

The draw left Newcastle seventh in the Premier League table after seven matches, while Everton sit in 15th on five points.
