Carragher takes brutal dig at Romero after brutal derby moment

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher issued a stinging nine-word takedown of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero after they lost the latest instalment of the north London derby.

Gabriel's thumping header in the 64th minute proved to be the difference between the bitter rivals as an under-strength Arsenal took home a valuable three points.

Romero was somewhat at fault for the Gunners' goal as he was tasked with marking Gabriel on the corner which he scored from.

However, the Argentinian international lost his man and it proved costly as Gabriel rose unchallenged to nod home Bukayo Saka's delivery.

Carragher, who was a mainstay of Liverpool's defence at centre-back for over 16 years, did not hold back in his blunt verdict of Romero.

Cristian Romero lost his man Gabriel in what proved to be the game-winning goal for Arsenal

'Romero's start to the season has been very poor,' Carragher posted on X.

The 26-year-old has started all four of Tottenham's Premier League fixtures this season.

However, Romero and the rest of his backline have kept one clean sheet all season, which came in a 4-0 thumping of last-placed Everton.

The loss to Arsenal kept Tottenham in 13th with just four points from as many games.

One of those points came from their opening fixture against Leicester City when Tottenham drew 1-1.

Romero got involved in a verbal slinging match in the second half with the Foxes' resident wind-up merchant Jamie Vardy after the latter scored an equaliser.

As Vardy went off the field, he pointed to the Premier League badge and held up one finger, referencing he had one league title to his name.

The 37-year-old striker again pointed to the badge and motioned the number zero in the direction of Tottenham's fans in a brutal reminder of their lack of league titles.

Vardy then had a few choice words for Romero as he walked off the field.

The former England international told the Spurs man in no uncertain terms to 'f*** off', although Vardy later joked about the incident after the match.

Romero and Tottenham will look to bounce back from their north London derby defeat when they travel to Coventry for their third round EFL Cup tie on Wednesday.
