A look at England
So less than eight weeks on from the Euro 2024 final heartbreak, England are back in action with a new man at the helm.
Lee Carsley will be in charge for at least the two games over this international break, but he will have his eyes firmly set on the role permanently having impressed as the Under-21 boss and received the backing of a number of players.
One thing that sticks out is that he won silverware with the youngsters. How England would love that with the senior side...
What a game we have on our hands!
There just so much to this game. I mentioned the stuff with the three ex-Ireland representers, but, on the surface, it’s the start of a Nations League campaign that needs to be better than the last.
England played six games in the 2023-24 edition and won a grand total of zero. Three draws, three points, and relegation from League A. You may remember the humiliation to Hungary last summer.
These are pretty much glorified friendlies, but they are still ultimately competitive fixtures.
In League B now, promotion is pretty much a necessity.
England are back!
Good afternoon one and all and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage of England’s game against Ireland in the Nations League.
There’s so much to unpack. It’s the start of a new Nations League campaign (how many of you remember that England got relegated?). A few players are taking on their former side. And Lee Carsley will lead out the senior men’s team for the first time.
We’ll be right here for the next few hours to take you through all the action from Dublin, from the build-up, to the team news, to the action itself.
Strap in. Kick off is around two hours away.
