Ex-Premier League winner accused of doing a runner to avoid being sold

A former Premier League winner has been accused of evading meetings during the summer transfer window in a bid to avoid being sold by his club.

The defender - who strenuously denies the bizarre claims - played in England's top flight for seven years from 2016 to 2023 before leaving for Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas.

The player in question won both the Premier League and FA Cup during his time in England but has struggled to hit the same heights since leaving the division.

Besiktas have accused the player, who is 29 years old, of snubbing several offers from clubs around the world during the summer.

Besiktas spokesman Huseyin Yucel has suggested that the player would 'escape' the training ground in order to miss negotiations.

Former Leicester City man Daniel Amartey was only six months into his spell in the East Midlands when the Foxes did the unthinkable and lifted the Premier League.

During his time in England, Amartey made 145 appearances for Leicester, netting three times, before jetting off to Turkey for a new chapter.

However, after only one year, Amartey has allegedly taken to bizarre lengths to ensure he is not shipped off by Besiktas.

'Amartey is a strange person,' said Yucel. 'We made an agreement with a team from Saudi Arabia, but he did not get on the plane.

'We agreed [a deal] with Eyupspor, but he escaped through the back door of our facilities.

'He said, 'I will go to Germany or England'. When he was told the transfer window is closed, he said, 'How will it close?''

During the window, Besiktas general secretary Kaan Sakul disclosed that Amartey supposedly turned down offers from seven different clubs.

He revealed: 'So far seven written offers have been received for Daniel Amartey. We reached an agreement with Al-Shabab. The player would earn more with them than he would here.

'He said OK, we bought his plane ticket, but he gave up. We asked him why, and he said, "I don't want to play in Dubai". We last met with Eyupspor, but the player did not accept this either. Finally we said, "Let's give him what he will get for a year".

'He said OK, but then sent a message saying he gave up. He said he wants to go in January.'

The bizarre storyline told by both Yucel and Sakul has been unequivocally denied by the former Foxes defender with a short but strong statement.

'They are completely untrue. Nothing like that happened - those allegations should be disregarded.' Said Amartey.
