Fans in hysterics as Man U legend Gary Neville answers clearing calls

Fans have been left in hysterics after Gary Neville answered clearing calls on A-level results day from students hoping to clinch a place at his University Academy 92.

The Manchester United legend set up the further education institution with old teammates Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.

UA92 revealed it is expecting to welcome more than 500 students at the university this year, an increase of 49.2 per cent from last year, as it looks to combat a decrease in people across the country applying for further education.

And Neville lent a helping hand yesterday as he grabbed a headset and did his best impression of a motivational speaker to up the moods of those in clearing.

Unsurprisingly, social media has been awash with fans ruthlessly mocking the former England right-back for his attempts to console students whose A-level results were not quite as good as expected.

Noah posted the video of Neville at the call centre and said: 'Imagine flunking your exams and then Gary Neville is trying to give words of wisdom.'

Bassett defended the ex-footballer's punditry but was unconvinced by his performance on the phone.

'The Neviller is great at analysing and is by far and away the best pundit I've ever known in my life time,' he said.

'He's clearly an accomplished businessman. His talents do stop somewhat short of motivational speaking, however.'

Thomas Moran, meanwhile, added: 'His day got worse after speaking to him.'

Another user said: 'Just failed maths and Gary Neville is telling you "life is like a game of football" my head would be on Pluto.'

Norman Price referenced the pundit's brief stint of management in Spain in his reponse.

He added: 'Must’ve been channelling one of his Valencia team talks there

And one user replied: '"Life's like a game of football". Cheers Gary, just failed my exams and have no idea what to do with my life.'

In the video Neville picks up the phone to one student and says: 'Hi Charlie how are you? It's Gary Neville.'

After a response from the caller, Gary realises that Charlie's A-level results day has not exactly gone to plan.

'Why's it a bad day, what's happened to you?' he says.

Shortly after, he adds: 'Right. Well, look, I always think life is like a game of football, you win some, you lose some and you draw some.

'And obviously you're feeling a little bit disappointed this morning.

'But what we do here at UA92 is, we've got lots of examples of students, young people like yourself, who have had that same journey, that same sort of disappointment on this day but they've recovered very quickly from it.

'And we provide an awful lot for people like yourself who are disappointed today but make them be able to see there is a bright future, and you definitely have got a bright future.

One social media user thought the motivational speaking was as bad as Neville's team talks at Valencia

'Sometimes you don't quite get the results that you want so keep your head up won't you.

'So keep your spirits up and hopefully I'll see you at UA92 soon.'

The university, which is a collaboration with Lancaster University, boasts a campus in Old Trafford and a business school in city centre and offers a range of unusual initiatives, including no end-of-year exams.
